Radiation-based sensors enable precise measurement of liquids and bulk solids under extreme process conditions such as high temperatures, pressures, and aggressive materials. They can be installed on the outside of process vessels during ongoing production, without disturbing the process in any way.

    Application area

    The flexible detector is used on round vessels and vessels with conical outlet and is suitable for measurement of liquids, solids, slurries and suspensions. Due to its thin, flexible scintillator cross-section, FIBERTRAC 31 can be easily adapted to round vessels.

    Distillation column

    The heavy, highly viscous process material and extreme temperature are located in the bottom part of the distillation. For level control of residual feeds, a non-contact measurement is essential for reliability. Monitoring head space pressure at the upper end of refinery columns is important to ensure that the process is operating under ideal conditions.

    Fluid catalytic cracking unit

    Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) is one of the most important conversion processes used in petroleum refineries. As with many other refining applications, the vessels in the reactor system need to be operated and controlled at their optimum levels, as this is critical for the process productivity. Maintaining the proper levels also ensures that the expensive catalyst is used at maximum efficiency, with no waste.

    Reboiler

    Evaporators are heat exchangers that are deployed at the bottom of distillation columns. In the evaporator, the residue is boiled up from the sump and fed back into the distillation process. Precise control of the level in the evaporator ensures efficient operation of the plant. A reliable measurement also ensures that the heating coils are always covered with liquid, to prevent any overheating incidents.

    Application area

    Storage tanks for highly toxic liquids

    For extremely toxic substances such as phosgene, absolute control over the process is a necessity. In industrial applications, these products are only used in hermetically closed circuits. To minimize the inherent risks, independent protection devices form an integral part of the tank equipment. Moreover, it is important to keep the number of tank openings as small as possible. An external level measuring system that includes point level detection is ideal for such situations.

    Cyclone

    In clinker production, cyclones are used to preheat the raw meal. Before the raw meal enters the rotary kiln it is preheated to +900 °C in the cyclone. Constant monitoring of the buildup thickness on the walls ensures a continuous process.

    Lime kiln

    A lime kiln is used to produce quicklime through the calcination of limestone. Here the furnace is filled from the top and the calcined limestone (quicklime) is collected at the bottom of the furnace. Accurate level measurement ensures optimal charging and hence efficient operation of the furnace.
